This week's topic: Metabolic Endotoxemia
In functional medicine, we are often reminded that "all disease begins in the gut" (with "leaky gut" being attributed as a leading cause of many gut and systemic health issues).
Over the last 6 months, I wanted to see what the literature (especially the human literature) said about leaky gut and one of its outcomes, metabolic endotoxemia.
This email is a sample of what I found! But if you want to learn more of my findings, join me in an upcoming free webinar on July 29th (4pm MST)! Click here to register.
Overview of today's email:
- 3 facts about metabolic endotoxemia
- Clinical tips

1. 3 facts about metabolic endotoxemia
- Metabolic endotoxemia (MetEndo or ME) refers to chronically elevated levels of bacterial endotoxins (lipoopolysaccharides, aka LPS) without overt infection.
- Per the research, metabolic endotoxemia appears to be recognized as the CAUSE of metabolic syndrome, but it is linked to many other conditions.
- Saturated fat, specifically a diet high in saturated fat, has consistently been shown to be a trigger of metabolic endotoxemia (Resource to peruse).

2. Clinical Tips
I consider metabolic endotoxemia in a patient who is doing everything "right" with nutrition and lifestyle (even trying low carb/keto, AND we've done a thorough gut/hormone/toxin workup) but still continues to have:
- Weight loss resistance
- Persistently elevated metabolic markers
If someone is metabolically unhealthy, or is following a very low carb diet but still has elevated metabolic markers, consider recommending a short duration of a low or no saturated fat diet while addressing other triggers of leaky gut/metabolic endotoxemia.

Last Chance to Join the Functional Medicine Collective (FMC)
Why did I launch the FMC?
- I wanted a resource that focused on the most recent human-based research in functional medicine (social media posts get lost among other content) as well as practical clinical tips....but I couldn't find such a resource.
- I also wanted this resource to be on a platform that was similar to Facebook where I could chat with like-minded clinicians.
What are the top 3 benefits of the FMC?
- Since March 2025, I've taken a weekly deep dive into a topic pertinent to functional medicine, focusing on the most recent evidence from clinical studies done on humans as well as practical wisdom I learned in practice. There's currently a vault of over 60 deep dive posts (Wisdom Wednesdays)! Click here to see the list.
- Every member gets a monthly 1:1 with me, where we can discuss cases or just have a chance to chat!
- Clinical support resources (e.g. handouts, quarterly deep dive into specific topics, and a dedicated resource reference section which can be accessed via the app or website).
This is the last week to sign up (doors close July 31st), before it goes to rolling open enrollment! Click here to learn more, or click the button below to join my community!
P.S. If you want the occasional 1:1 mentor call, but don't want to join the FMC, I'm now offering these without the requirement to be a member! Click here to schedule.
