This week's topic: MCAS Treatments
Test your knowledge on MCAS treatments!
- What treatment has potentially 3 actions that can address MCAS (H1 and H2 receptor blocker, and mast cell stabilizer)?
- Which peptide has the most research behind it, as it applies to the treatment of MCAS?
Overview of today's email:

Overview of MCAS Treatments
We tend to think of anti-histamines and mast cell stabilizers as the go-to treatments, but there are MANY options including:
- Synthetic anti-histamines (MANY options)
- Prescription mast cell stabilizers (e.g. Cromolyn)
- Leukotriene Inhibitors (natural and pharmaceutical)
- Natural-sourced anti-histamines (e.g. D-Hist combination)
- Natural-sourced mast cell stabilizers (e.g. Spirulina)
- "Repurposed" pharmaceuticals (e.g. Amitriptyline)
- Low dose naltrexone
- Peptides (e.g. GLP-1s have the most research behind them on MCAS)
- Flavenoid nutraceuticals (e.g. quercetin)
- Food-based support (especially flavenoid-rich foods)
- Herbs (e.g. Stinging Nettle)
- Teas (e.g. Chamomile)
- Spices (e.g. Rosemary)
- Vitamins (e.g. Vitamin D)
- Enzyme-based nutraceuticals (e.g. DAO)
- Bioactive lipids (e.g. PEA)
- Calming amino acids (e.g. L-theanine)
- Other nutraceuticals (e.g. Melatonin)
- Neuro-immune support (e.g. Limbic system retraining programs)
- Structural support (e.g. Craniosacral work)

Two Treatments You May Want to Try with Patients
The following treatments can be considered in anyone who is not highly sensitive to supplements or foods:
- Nigella sativa: Per in vitro and animal studies, this is an H1 receptor blocker, a mast cell stabilizer, and an indirect H2 blocker (not to mention a leukotriene inhibitor) (2024 review of Nigella sativa)
- Luteolin (PureLut from Algonot is my preferred brand): 200mg BID to TID; luteolin is a potent mast cell stabilizer, anti-inflammatory, improves the gut barrier, and more!

The Functional Medicine Collective is evolving! In this (intentionally) small collaborative community, I aim to get to know each member and their unique challenges as we navigate the nuances of real-world functional medicine.
Starting in April, we will be taking a deep "practical" dive into individual topics, focusing on the scientific evidence behind evaluation and treatments! Upcoming monthly topics:
- Practical Review of Leaky gut (with evidence-based treatments)
- Practical Review of Metabolic endotoxemia (with evidence-based treatments)
- Practical Review of Menopause Hormone Therapy
- Practical Review of Perimenopause Evaluation and Treatment
Recordings of the above will be available for non-members to purchase for $297 per topic.
Click on one of the buttons below to learn more about the options at FMC and apply!

Additional resources that may be helpful:
New resource - A 2-page clinical reference document on Leaky Gut Syndrome ($49). I am creating a series of these and have been calling them my "back up brain" (BUBs), but am professionally calling these Evidence Essentials :)
Every time one of you chooses to support me financially, it tells me my effort and words matter. It’s validation. It’s fuel.
Thank you for believing in this work — and in me.
